Irish Third Level Staff Stand with Student Activists for a Free Palestine

As members of staff in Irish third level education, we want to express our concern at recent institutional responses to student activism against Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. We stand in solidarity with student activists on our campuses. We admire their courage in standing against a US-funded, EU-assisted genocide and we join them in demanding that their universities take similarly principled stands. To date, however, these demands have been ignored. Instead, we are seeing escalating actions on the part of third level institutions to suppress student protest. Writing this letter from University College Dublin, we have seen opposition range from the claim that UCD Students’ Union protests were in breach of UCD’s ‘Dignity and Respect’ policy, to the direct use of force against student activists.

Across the island of Ireland, we continue to watch our university administrations legitimate their 6+ months of silence on Israel’s atrocities against the Palestinian people by asserting that they are holding a neutral position in defence of academic freedom. To remain silent in the face of this genocidal war on occupied Palestine is not neutrality, but complicity. Nor is the call for ceasefire a controversial matter; it has the overwhelming support of the people of Ireland as well as the Irish government. UCD’s recent platforming and celebration of Nancy Pelosi, a powerful Democratic member of the US House of Representatives and a long-time supporter of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, directly contradicts its purported neutrality. At the event where UCD conferred Pelosi with an honorary doctorate in Law, UCD Students’ Union President Martha Ní Riada interrupted to voice her opposition and was immediately set upon by two plain-clothes Gardaí and three security men. Ní Riada’s violent removal was caught on video by a student journalist, as she was pulled with excessive force from the venue. Later that evening, the Garda Public Order Unit policed the 100+ protesters, mostly students, who gathered outside UCD O’Reilly Hall where Pelosi was further celebrated with a Sutherland Award and gala dinner.

This combined with the threatened censure of the UCD BDS student group indicate that rather than using its considerable institutional power and influence to call for an immediate ceasefire, UCD intends instead to suppress the voices of those who speak out, in particular those from its own student body. Apart from demonstrating a lack of institutional courage in the face of an ongoing genocide, this approach from UCD is extremely unlikely to quell student protest at this moment in time when no person of conscience should be silent. By taking this approach UCD administration is likely to find itself in the position of having to go further down a route of repression when it might have chosen to show leadership. As the pro-Palestine student solidarity encampments spread across university campuses in the United States, France, Australia, and beyond, it is clear that even the violent repression, expulsion and incarceration of student protesters and faculty at, for instance, Columbia University, Emory University, NYU, and the University of Texas at Austin is not quelling student and staff solidarity with Palestine or silencing demands that their universities boycott and divest from Israeli institutions.

As you are aware, the International Court of Justice has determined that the actions of the Israeli state towards the captive civilian population of Gaza may plausibly constitute genocide, a view shared by the Irish Government. Highly credible international aid and human rights organisations have detailed that the population is on the brink of a famine caused by the denial of access to sufficient food, water, and health services. The entire health service has been destroyed and more than two million people displaced, many three or four times over. Despite this level of violent destruction the Israeli onslaught continues unchecked with repeated and on-going deadly attacks on Rafah, where displaced Gazans are now concentrated. The Israeli military has indiscriminately killed over 34,800 Palestinians – a number of people nearly equivalent to the student population of the largest university in Ireland, UCD. How many Palestinians have to die, how many more mass graves need to be uncovered in the al-Shifa and Nasser hospitals, for university leaders to wake up?

Further, a key component of Israel’s genocidal destruction of Gaza is what scholar Karma Nabulsi has described as scholasticide, the systematic obliteration of Palestinian teachers, scholars, students, and educational infrastructure that began with the 1948 Nakba. This ongoing scholasticide has most recently incurred the destruction of all 12 universities in Gaza by the Israeli military. This fact places a particular obligation on university leaders to demonstrate solidarity with our colleagues and peers in Gaza. Libraries, archives, museums, institutions of cultural and historical memory have been flattened and looted. It is estimated that 356 of our educator peers and colleagues have been murdered, including 3 university presidents and 98 professors. As university staff we have the privilege to work with and for our students. We cannot believe that institutions like UCD are maintaining a false ‘neutrality’ even as more than 6,000 students just like ours have had their lives extinguished in Gaza.

‘I was supposed to graduate next month,’ a student from Gaza told us, determined to resume her studies at UCD. ‘Israel took this moment away from me after bombing all the universities in Gaza including mine. Even so, I got the courage to choose life again.’

Moved by such courage, we demand that Irish universities take concrete steps. These include:

1) Disclosing and divesting from any and all financial complicity in Israeli occupation.

2) Implementing adequate support for displaced Palestinian students and academics.

3) Making principled calls for ceasefire.

After over 200 days of Israel’s aggression, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, the Higher Education Authority and the Irish Universities Association have yet to enact a sectoral response to support Palestinian students and scholars with swift enrolment, scholarship opportunities, and psychological support, such as we saw implemented for displaced Ukrainian students. We call on these agencies to step up for displaced Palestinians in coordination with Irish universities. Moreover, some Irish universities have failed to respond adequately to the Union of Students in Ireland’s request under the Freedom of Information Act 2014 to disclose partnerships with Israeli institutions and companies. We renew our call for a boycott of complicit Israeli academic institutions and divestment from companies benefitting from occupation, apartheid, and continued ethnic cleansing in Palestine. And we assert that academic freedom is an insufficient defence of such relations in plain view of scholasticide in Gaza.

We write, with increasing frustration but also hope inspired by our students and students rising around the world, to reclaim Irish universities as spaces of justice, anti-racism, and anti-colonialism. These demands should no longer appear radical amidst the ongoing destruction of Gaza, and they follow the lead of principled student movements as well as the principles of the civil society-led Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. Indeed, Irish third level institutions are completely out of step with the broader public in Ireland in their refusal to deplore the Israeli state’s genocidal atrocities in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The status quo has failed; but Palestine is freeing the world. The name Gaza comes from power or strength. ‘Gaza is the might which exults in her name,’ wrote the poet Mahmoud Darwish, ‘ever angry at the world’s silence at her long siege.’ Our students have not been silent. Students have always been at the forefront of peace and liberation struggles, and that is a proud tradition that bears recognition and support by all members of society. If the historian Ilan Pappé is right, and this is the beginning of the end of the Zionist project, it’s on us to disrupt the colonialist narratives that militate against Palestinian freedom at every level—beginning with our own universities.
